Free Legal Help Tonight: Ask Your Social Security Disability Questions on ABC15

Wednesday, August 19 · 5:00–7:00 p.m. · ABC15 Arizona

Tonight I’m joining the Let ABC15 Know team and the State Bar of Arizona for a free, live phone bank focused on one thing: Social Security Disability.

From 5 to 7 p.m., you can call in and talk to an attorney about your disability claim at no cost. ABC15 will put the call-in number on the screen once the phone bank starts, so tune in at 5 to get it.

No appointment. No fee. You don’t even have to leave your house.

Why I signed up

I’ve represented claimants in more than 3,500 Social Security disability hearings. In almost every one of them, there was a moment where the person told me they wished someone had explained the process to them a year earlier — before they missed a deadline, before they gave up after the first denial, before they filed the wrong appeal.

Two hours on the phone won’t fix a broken system. But it will get straight answers to a few hundred people who can’t afford to guess.

What you can ask about

Bring us anything, but these are the questions that come up most:

  • My claim was denied. What do I do now, and how long do I have to act?
  • How long is the wait for a hearing right now?
  • Can I work part-time while my claim is pending?
  • I’m over 50. Does that change how Social Security evaluates my case?
  • What’s the difference between SSDI and SSI, and which one am I applying for?
  • How does backpay work, and how far back does it go?
  • What actually happens at a disability hearing?
  • Do I need a lawyer — and what does one cost?

If you’re caring for a parent or a spouse who’s going through this, call on their behalf. That’s a good use of the two hours too.

What tonight is, and what it isn’t

This is free general legal information, not representation. No attorney-client relationship is created by calling, nobody will be reviewing your file over the phone, and with two hours and a lot of callers, the answers will be short.

What you should get out of it is direction: what your next step is, what your deadline is, and where to go from there.
